Homeschooling in DFW: Co-ops, resources, and what you need to know

Homeschooling is growing in DFW. Whether you're considering it or already doing it, here are the resources.

Texas homeschool law basics:

  • Texas is one of the most homeschool-friendly states. No registration, no testing requirements, no curriculum approval needed.
  • Requirements: cover reading, spelling, grammar, math, and good citizenship. That's it.

DFW co-ops (group learning):

  • Classical Conversations — multiple DFW locations. Classical education model. $400-600/semester + tutor fees. Source: classicalconversations.com
  • ALERT (Arlington Learning Enrichment and Recreation Tutorials) — one of the largest DFW co-ops. Various subjects. Source: Facebook group.
  • Wild DFW Homeschool Co-op — nature-based learning. Outdoor focused.
  • Heritage Academy (multiple DFW) — University Model School. Part homeschool, part classroom (2-3 days/week). Source: heritageacademy.com

Curriculum resources:

  • Abeka, BJU Press — structured, traditional
  • The Good and the Beautiful — Charlotte Mason inspired, free LA curriculum

Sports and activities for homeschoolers:

  • Texas allows homeschoolers to participate in UIL activities at their zoned public school. Source: TX Education Code.
  • THSA (Texas Homeschool Sports Association) — competitive sports leagues. Source: texashomeschoolsports.org

Socialization (the #1 question):

  • Co-ops provide weekly group interaction
  • Park days — DFW homeschool groups meet weekly at parks. Check Facebook groups.
  • Community activities: sports leagues, music lessons, 4-H, Scouts

THSC convention in The Woodlands every year is worth attending even if you're just considering homeschooling. Massive vendor hall, workshops, legal updates.

Heritage Academy University Model is the best of both worlds. My kid gets classroom instruction 2 days and homeschool flexibility 3 days.

Classical Conversations in our DFW community has been excellent. The structure keeps us accountable and the kids genuinely enjoy the group days.
