Manchester City's financial fair play charges: What happens if they are found guilty?

Manchester City face over 100 charges of alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules spanning from 2009 to 2018. The independent commission hearing concluded and the football world is waiting for the verdict. Here is what you need to know.

The charges (Source: Premier League official statement):

  • 115+ charges related to alleged breaches of financial fair play regulations
  • Allegations include inflating sponsorship revenue, underreporting manager compensation, and failing to cooperate with investigations
  • The period covers 2009-2018

Possible outcomes:

  1. Full acquittal. City have maintained their innocence. Their legal team has argued procedural and substantive defenses.
  2. Points deduction. The most likely punishment if found guilty of some charges. Everton received a points deduction for a single FFP breach. City's alleged breaches span 9 years.
  3. Relegation. The nuclear option. The Premier League rules allow for it. Whether the commission would go this far is debated.
  4. Fine and suspended punishment. A financial penalty with future conditions.

The wider implications:

  • If City are punished severely, it sends a message that financial rules have teeth.
  • If City are acquitted or lightly punished, it effectively means FFP is unenforceable for the biggest clubs.
  • Player and staff contracts may have clauses related to relegation. A mass exodus would follow any severe punishment.

What other clubs are saying: Publicly, nothing. Privately, multiple Premier League clubs reportedly pushed for the harshest possible punishment. Source: The Athletic reporting.

City fan here. The club has maintained innocence throughout. The leaked emails were taken out of context. Wait for the actual verdict before convicting in the court of public opinion.

As a neutral, I hope the rules are enforced fairly. If Everton gets docked points for a minor breach and City walks free from 115 charges, the system is a joke.

They will get a fine and a slap on the wrist. The Premier League cannot afford to lose Manchester City. The TV deal money, the global brand, the Guardiola effect. Follow the money.

If City get relegated, it is the biggest event in English football history. The ripple effects on transfers, league competition, and broadcasting deals would be seismic.
