DFW vs Houston vs Austin: The Texas triangle debate

I've lived in all three. Here's the honest comparison.

DFW:

  • Pros: Best job market, most diverse economy, affordable suburbs, huge food scene, family-friendly
  • Cons: Sprawl, car-dependent, toll roads everywhere, no natural beauty, traffic
  • Best for: Careers, families, people who want space and opportunity

Houston:

  • Pros: Most diverse city in America, incredible food (arguably best in TX), strong energy/medical economy, NASA, cheaper than DFW now
  • Cons: Humidity is oppressive, flooding risk, traffic equally bad, flat
  • Best for: Food obsessives, energy industry, medical careers, people who like humidity (nobody)

Austin:

  • Pros: Live music capital, hill country beauty, tech scene, walkable downtown, "vibe"
  • Cons: Expensive (no longer affordable), traffic for its size is TERRIBLE, overrated by people who visited once on vacation, housing crisis
  • Best for: Tech workers, outdoor enthusiasts, music lovers who can afford $2,500 rent for a 1BR

The numbers: | Factor | DFW | Houston | Austin | |--------|-----|---------|--------| | Median home price | $350K | $320K | $450K+ | | Avg 1BR rent | $1,300 | $1,200 | $1,600 | | Fortune 500 HQs | 22 | 21 | 6 | | Population | 7.5M | 7.1M | 2.3M |

My take: DFW is the best place to BUILD a life. Austin is the best place to ENJOY a life (if you can afford it). Houston is the best place to EAT.

Fight me.

San Antonio erasure in this thread is criminal. River Walk, missions, best Mexican food in Texas, most affordable big city. Put some respect on SA.
