Catalytic converter theft is a nationwide epidemic and DFW is a hotspot. Here's the data and the fix.
Most targeted vehicles in DFW:
- Toyota Prius (hybrid converters contain more precious metals)
- Honda Accord/CR-V
- Ford F-150/F-250 (high ground clearance = easy access)
- Toyota Tacoma/Tundra
- Chevy Silverado
Why: A stolen catalytic converter contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium worth $50-300 on the black market. Replacement cost to you: $1,000-3,000.
How fast: A skilled thief with a battery-powered reciprocating saw can remove a catalytic converter in 60-90 seconds.
Protection options:
- Cat shield/cage — A metal plate that bolts around the converter. CatClamp, Cat Shield, Miller Cat. $150-400 installed. This is the best prevention.
- Engrave your VIN on the converter. Free at many DPD community events. Makes it harder for scrapyards to buy.
- Park in a garage. If you have one, use it.
- Motion-sensor lights and cameras in driveway.
Legal landscape: Texas passed HB 4110 in 2023 strengthening penalties for catalytic converter theft and requiring scrap metal dealers to maintain records of converter purchases. Selling a stolen converter is now a state jail felony.
