seminar alert — [visiting black belt] at [DFW gym] this month. who is going?

one of the best things about training in a major metro like DFW is that world-class grapplers come through on seminar tours regularly. just saw that another high-level visiting instructor is coming to a DFW gym this month.

for anyone who hasnt been to a seminar before, heres what to expect and whether its worth the money.

what a BJJ seminar is:

  • a visiting high-level practitioner (usually a famous black belt or world champion) teaches a 2-3 hour session at a local gym
  • they typically teach a specific system or position (leg locks, guard passing, back attacks, etc)
  • you drill with partners while the instructor walks around and helps
  • usually includes a Q&A at the end and photo opportunities
  • cost: $50-100 typically

are seminars worth it?

  • YES if: the instructor teaches a system youre interested in, you take notes and drill the material after, you ask questions and engage
  • NO if: you just want a photo with a famous person, you dont plan to practice anything you learn, you cant afford it and its stretching your budget

how to get the most out of a seminar:

  1. research the instructor beforehand. watch their matches and instructional clips so you have context
  2. bring a notebook or use your phone to take notes between drilling segments
  3. partner with someone at your skill level or higher. you want a partner who provides realistic resistance
  4. ask ONE specific question during Q&A. make it about something youve been struggling with
  5. spend the next 2 weeks drilling the seminar techniques in regular class. if you dont drill it you WILL forget it

the seminar circuit in DFW:

  • DFW is a major stop on the national seminar tour. most big-name grapplers hit a DFW gym at least once a year
  • some gyms are more connected than others. Lovato BJJ brings world-class visitors regularly because of Rafael Lovato Jr's network
  • follow DFW gyms on social media to catch announcements. seminars fill up fast

whos been to a great seminar in DFW recently? what did you learn?

went to a seminar at a DFW gym last month and it was the best $75 ive ever spent on jiu jitsu. the instructor broke down a guard passing system in a way that completely changed how i approach the position. the key is to actually drill the material afterwards

the best seminar experience ive had in DFW was at Lovato BJJ. the combination of Rafael Lovato Jr plus a visiting world-class instructor created a learning environment that was on another level. if Lovato announces a seminar, go
