just got back from a local NAGA in DFW. went 3-1 in nogi and 1-1 in gi. lost my gi finals match by advantages which stings but overall a solid day.
starting this thread for DFW grapplers to share their competition results — wins AND losses. this community should celebrate the people who have the courage to compete regardless of the outcome.
my results:
- nogi: won first match by RNC, won second by points (7-2), won semis by guillotine, lost finals by split decision that i thought i won but thats competition
- gi: won first match by collar choke from mount, lost second match by points. got my guard passed repeatedly which tells me exactly what i need to work on
what i learned:
- my nogi game is significantly ahead of my gi game. this makes sense because i train nogi 3x/week and gi only 1x/week. the data doesnt lie
- my guillotine is my highest percentage submission in competition. 3 out of my last 6 competition wins have been guillotines
- my guard retention in gi needs serious work. i got passed 4 times in 2 gi matches. thats unacceptable
- the cardio was fine for 3-4 matches but by match 5 i was noticeably slower. need to train more rounds at competition intensity
the beauty of competing: every tournament gives you a crystal clear picture of where your game is. you cant lie to yourself in competition. the things you tell yourself you are good at in training get tested for real on the competition mat.
DFW competitors — share your recent results. gold medals, first round losses, everything in between. we are all on the same journey.
competed at the same NAGA! went 2-2. both losses were to guys from Alliance Dallas who were clearly experienced competitors. no shame in that. my two wins were both by armbar from closed guard which has been my project position for the last 3 months. drilling works
