DFW open mat schedule — every gym that hosts open mats and when

trying to compile a complete list of open mats in the DFW area. open mats are the best way to train with different people, test your game outside your home gym, and meet the local BJJ community. updating this as i get more info so drop yours in the comments.

DALLAS:

  • Mohler MMA — Saturday 11am-1pm, open to all. great mix of skill levels, usually 30+ people on the mat
  • Gracie Barra Dallas — Sunday 11am-12:30pm, may need to sign a waiver as a visitor
  • Alliance Dallas — Saturday 12pm-2pm, solid competition-focused open mat
  • Martial Arts of Dallas — Friday 6pm-8pm, smaller but very welcoming

FORT WORTH:

  • Lovato BJJ — Saturday 10am-12pm, Rafael Lovato Jr himself is sometimes on the mat. bucket list open mat for sure
  • Carlson Gracie Fort Worth — Sunday 10am-12pm, old school vibes

MID CITIES / SUBURBS:

  • Octagon MMA (Grapevine) — Saturday 11am-1pm, multiple locations do open mats
  • Fortis MMA — Saturday 10am-12pm, warning: the training partners here are killers. if youre a hobbyist just be prepared to get worked
  • Peak Performance MMA (Keller) — Sunday 12pm-2pm

ETIQUETTE REMINDERS:

  • always ask permission before visiting. most gyms are cool with it but a heads up is respectful
  • bring your own water and towel
  • dont go 100% intensity at someone elses gym. youre a guest
  • if youre from a competing gym, be upfront about it. most coaches appreciate honesty
  • tip: open mats are the best way to test if you want to switch gyms without the awkwardness of a full trial class

DFW people please add gyms i missed. trying to make this the definitive list.

add Main Street Boxing and MMA in Mansfield — they do open mat Saturday mornings. smaller crew but really good training partners and the coach is welcoming to visitors

Octagon MMA in Arlington also does open mats on Saturdays. they have multiple locations so check which one

the Fortis open mat warning is accurate lmao. i went as a blue belt and got absolutely mauled by a purple belt who turned out to be a UFC fighter. humbling experience but i learned more in 2 hours than a week at my home gym

the etiquette section is important. nothing worse than a visitor who comes in and tries to smash everyone to prove their gym is better. chill out, flow, learn, be cool

one thing ill add: some gyms charge a drop in fee for open mat ($10-20) and some are free. always ask ahead of time so youre not surprised

this list is clutch. ive been wanting to visit other gyms but didnt know when open mats were. saving this thread

Lovato BJJ open mat is a pilgrimage every BJJ player in DFW should make at least once. rolling in the same room as Rafael Lovato Jr is surreal
