competing for the first time — NAGA vs IBJJF vs local tournaments. which should a white belt do first

been training for about 8 months and i want to compete but im overwhelmed by the options. can people who have actually competed break down the differences?

from what ive gathered:

NAGA (North American Grappling Association)

  • cheaper entry ($80-100)
  • same day weigh ins (less stressful)
  • matches can be gi or nogi
  • rule set is a bit more relaxed
  • tends to be less intimidating atmosphere
  • they come through DFW several times a year

IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation)

  • more expensive ($120-150+)
  • stricter rules and gi requirements
  • the "official" competitive standard
  • annual membership required ($40)
  • more competitive field typically
  • DFW Open is usually in the spring

local Smoothcomp tournaments

  • cheapest ($40-60)
  • smallest brackets but friendliest atmosphere
  • various DFW gyms host them throughout the year
  • great for first timers

my questions:

  1. which one should a white belt with 8 months experience do FIRST?
  2. what weight class do i pick if im between two?
  3. how many matches will i likely get?
  4. anyone got recommendations for specific upcoming tournaments in DFW?
  5. how do you deal with the nerves? i roll fine in practice but the idea of competing makes me want to puke

coach says im ready but i dont FEEL ready. is that normal?

sign up for both gi and nogi in your first tournament. more matches means more experience and you already paid for the day. at NAGA you can do both for a small additional fee

the adrenaline dump in your first match is something nobody can prepare you for. your heart rate will be 180bpm and your hands will shake. the second tournament is 50% better. the third is almost normal. you just have to go through it

do a local Smoothcomp tournament first. they are small, friendly, and low pressure. youll get 2-3 matches, experience the adrenaline dump, and realize competing is not as scary as you built it up to be. THEN do NAGA

you will never feel ready. i waited an extra 6 months because i didnt feel ready and then my first match lasted 45 seconds and i won by armbar. you are more ready than you think. your coach knows better than you do

DO NOT do IBJJF as your first tournament. the rules are strict, the refs are inconsistent, the cost is high, and the atmosphere is intense. save that for blue belt when you have competition experience

always go UP a weight class for your first tournament. cutting weight adds unnecessary stress. you want to focus on competing not on starving yourself for 3 days before

NAGA is the standard first tournament for most people. its well organized and the white belt divisions are usually big so youll get multiple matches. the same-day weigh in is also way less stressful than IBJJF
