Born and raised in Oak Cliff. Know this city inside and out.
Library storytime on Tuesday mornings has been our routine for 2 years. Miss Rachel (the librarian) is incredible. She does voices, songs, the whole thing. My kids look forward to it all week.
i switched gyms specifically because of this. old gym wouldnt teach leg locks until brown belt. new gym teaches the full system from day one with an emphasis on safety and control. night and day difference in my game
My parents moved to Rowlett in 1974, right after the lake was filled. They bought 2 acres for basically nothing. Those 2 acres are now a subdivision of 12 homes worth $400K+ each. Wild.
Can someone from the north side weigh in? Curious if it's the same up there.
The Lakeview Pkwy curve near Chiesa is a sneaky one. The speed limit drops from 45 to 35 and there is always an officer in that gas station lot. Set your cruise control.
cleaning the mats after class is how you earn respect as a new student. when the white belt grabs the mop without being asked, every upper belt notices. its a small thing that signals you respect the space and the community
The answer changes depending on which part of Houston you're in.
real talk: i switched to a gym that does 70% rolling 30% drilling and my technique actually got WORSE because i was developing bad habits with no correction. went back to a structured 50/50 gym and improved more in 6 months than the previous year of just rolling
Another reason to pay attention to what's happening locally.
fitness boxing gets so much hate but ill defend it for what it is — a great workout. the problem is when people think theyve learned to box after 6 months of hitting a bag to music. you havent. you learned choreography
Jack Johnson being from Texas is something more people should know. he broke the color barrier in sports before Jackie Robinson. the fact that he was a Texas fighter should be a source of pride for every combat sports fan in this state
Been thinking about this all week. Good timing on the post.
This is going to be a heated thread and I'm here for every second of it.
four stripes on my white belt and im THIS close to blue. my professor said im ready technically but wants to see me compete once before promoting me. entering the next NAGA in DFW. nervous but motivated
Not something I expected to read today but glad I did.
$180K for Pecan Grove Park is great news. That playground equipment is at least 10 years old. My kids love that park.
I've been to city council meetings about this. The developer has hit financing milestones that the previous attempts didn't. This version of Sapphire Bay is further along than any prior plan. But yes, timelines keep slipping.
What nobody mentions is the wastewater capacity question. Sapphire Bay at full buildout adds significant load. The city's wastewater master plan accounts for it but the timing of infrastructure upgrades matters.
The Houston food scene is seriously underrated. We don't get enough credit nationally.
Liberty Grove never lost power. We are on a different circuit apparently. Hope everyone gets restored soon.
counterpoint: at white belt, rolling IS more valuable than drilling because you dont have enough context to know why the drilled techniques matter. you need to get smashed enough times in live rolling to understand WHY guard retention matters before drilling guard retention clicks
I cannot believe I am saying this but the Domino's on Lakeview actually delivers faster than any other Domino's I have used in DFW. Under 25 minutes consistently. Credit where it is due.
Flood zone warning is important. Our neighbors on the cul-de-sac backing up to the lake had to get flood insurance. $2,400/year. That's not in the mortgage calculator. Check the FEMA map BEFORE you make an offer.
Sapphire Bay live music on the boardwalk during summer is growing. It's not Deep Ellum but it's RIGHT HERE and it's free. Support it so it gets bigger.
The cameras in the DART lot need to be better. When I reported my break-in, the officer said the footage quality was poor. DART needs to invest in actual HD cameras, not the 2008-era ones they have now.
The Rowlett-Lakeview game is an absolute scene. My family has lived here since 1990 and we've gone to every single one. Even years when both teams have losing records, the stands are packed. It's not about football — it's about community.
