Car insurance in Texas is insane and nobody talks about it. Mine went from $140 to $210/month for the same coverage. Zero accidents. Zero tickets.
Skip the job boards for the first week. Reach out directly to everyone you know. LinkedIn connections, former coworkers, friends of friends. 70% of jobs are filled through networking and that's not a cliché.
Rockwall Harbor is the move for a Friday night out from Rowlett. 12 minutes, park once, walk between bars. Bin 303 on a warm night with live jazz is perfect.
I will say this: Texas drivers are aggressive but they commit. It's the hesitant drivers from other states merging at 40mph who cause the real accidents.
the breathing thing is SO real. my first 6 months i would hold my breath every time someone passed my guard and then wonder why i was dying after one round. learn to breathe under pressure and your cardio doubles overnight
If you have little kids, the bounce house area is great but bring cash. Some vendors do not take cards. Also the face painting line gets insane so hit it first before the kids see the other stuff.
How genuinely friendly people are. I was suspicious at first. Turns out people just wave and hold doors open here. It's not weird, it's normal.
This is exactly why I keep a portable power station. Goal Zero Yeti 500 — keeps the fridge running for a few hours and charges all the phones. Worth every penny in Texas.
Did the Texas BBQ trail — hit 5 different BBQ spots across the state in 3 days. Gained 8 pounds. No regrets.
Property taxes in Rowlett are my single biggest expense after the mortgage. $10K/year on a $400K house is brutal. But the schools are funded and the city services are good. You get what you pay for.
Napoli's margherita is genuinely excellent. Fresh basil, quality mozzarella, the crust has actual char from the brick oven. It is Rowlett's best kept food secret and I hope it stays open for another 20 years.
Tinted windows, remote start, and a good sunshade for the windshield. That's the holy trinity of surviving Texas car heat.
Following this thread. Want to hear more takes.
The key is never letting your house get hot in the first place. Blackout curtains, good insulation, and never open the doors more than necessary. Treat it like winter in reverse.
Danaher has talked about this extensively. his approach is heavy drilling in training camps and more rolling during regular training. but even his "more rolling" phases include significant positional work. pure rolling with no structure is just exercise
Pressure washing. You can get a decent setup for $400. Driveways, fences, patios. Post on Nextdoor and you'll be booked within a week. $100-200 per driveway.
Lakeview Pkwy between Dalrock and Chiesa at 5:30 PM is the worst traffic in Rowlett. If this project fixes the signal timing alone it will make a difference.
TxDOT project timelines are suggestions at best. I've lived near a highway expansion that was supposed to take 2 years. It took 6. When it finished they immediately started a new project on the connecting highway.
this is the most common white and blue belt take and its almost always wrong. you want to roll because rolling is fun and drilling is boring. but the guys who drill more consistently improve faster. i know this because i was the guy who only wanted to roll and it took me 7 years to get my purple belt. my training partner who drilled religiously got his in 4
Real talk right here. No sugarcoating.
Whoever designed highway interchanges in Texas clearly wanted to see if humans could navigate 5 lanes merging simultaneously at 70mph. The answer is no.
Allergies. Cedar fever in winter is not a joke. I never had allergies anywhere else. Moved here and now I want to die every December through February.
The real authentic spots are usually in strip malls with no English on the menu. If abuela is in the kitchen you're in the right place.
Look at healthcare and government tech roles. They're not as flashy but they're still hiring and they don't lay off every 6 months. Stability matters when you've been burned.
Sharing this with my neighbors. They need to see this.
Red light running is the Texas state pastime. The light turns red and three more cars go through. I wait a full two seconds after my light turns green now.
