Chick-fil-A is the gold standard and I'm tired of people trying to find something better. It's sweet tea. They perfected it. Move on.
Be the one who initiates. "We should hang out sometime" means nothing. "Want to grab tacos Saturday at 1pm?" is a plan. Most people want friends but nobody wants to be the one to plan things.
my gym teaches them progressively which i think is the right approach. white belts learn straight ankle and defense. blue belts learn inside position and heel hooks. purple belts get the full system. safe and comprehensive
Springfield Park boat ramp before 7 AM on a Saturday morning — you will have the whole lake to yourself. Best kept secret in Rowlett.
Did the Texas BBQ trail — hit 5 different BBQ spots across the state in 3 days. Gained 8 pounds. No regrets.
If you're lucky enough to have a Gold's Gym nearby, that's still the gold standard for serious lifting. Some locations are better than others though.
hidden gem is the right description. its not flashy and it doesnt have UFC fighters training there but the coaching is legit and the people are great. sometimes thats all you need
Brazilian jiu jitsu gym. I know it sounds random but hear me out — you train with the same people 3-4 times a week, you suffer together, and the community is insanely tight. Changed my social life.
The trail connecting Community Park to Pecan Grove is one of the best running paths in the eastern suburbs. Flat, shaded, paved, and rarely crowded. I do a 5K loop three mornings a week.
Read your CC&Rs cover to cover. Half the violations HOAs send out are either not actually in the rules or they're enforcing selectively. If your neighbor's trash can is visible too, document it and bring it up.
Can someone from the north side weigh in? Curious if it's the same up there.
Palo Duro Canyon in the panhandle is basically a mini Grand Canyon and nobody talks about it. The drive up there is flat and boring but the canyon itself is stunning.
competed in Golden Gloves regionals twice in DFW. lost both times but the experience was worth more than any number of sparring sessions. the intensity of fighting in front of a crowd with judges and a ref is impossible to replicate in the gym
Station at Rowlett is worth it if you use the DART. I walk to the train every morning. No car payment, no gas, no parking downtown. The train noise is real but you get used to it in a week. Earplugs if you're sensitive.
the competition vs hobbyist culture depends heavily on which class you attend. the competition team class is intense. the fundamentals and regular classes are more accessible. choose your classes based on your goals
Port Aransas for a cheap beach trip. Not the prettiest beach in the world but the vibe is chill, the fishing is good, and hotels are way cheaper than Galveston.
I avoid Dalrock and 66 like the plague. It's not worth the 3 minutes it saves. Lakeview to PGBT every single time. My blood pressure thanks me.
Show up to HOA board meetings. Seriously. Most boards are 3-5 retired people with nothing better to do. You show up with 5 neighbors who are also sick of it and you can vote them out.
I fought a similar violation. Sent a written response requesting the specific bylaw and photos of other houses in violation. They dropped it. They count on people just complying without question.
It takes like a year. I know that's not what you want to hear but real friendships take time. Keep showing up to the same places consistently. The people who keep showing up too become your people.
McDonald's sweet tea for $1 is the best value in fast food beverages and I will die on this hill. They put an absurd amount of sugar in it.
the culture in a real boxing gym is unlike anything else. i train at a gym in south dallas where the oldest member is 67 and the youngest is 12. we all hit the same bags and work with the same coaches. nowhere else in society does that happen
Another reason to pay attention to what's happening locally.
Been thinking about this all week. Good to see it getting traction here.
Rec sports league. Volleyball, kickball, softball. You see the same people every week, you grab beers after games, friendships happen naturally. That's how I built my entire friend group here.
Marfa is one of the weirdest towns in America in the best way. Art installations in the middle of nowhere, the Marfa lights, Prada Marfa. Combine it with Big Bend for a full trip.
