Year 8 teacher here. I love teaching. I cannot afford teaching. I tutor, do test prep on weekends, and drive for a rideshare in the summer. It shouldn't be like this.

Nordstrom-side garage at the Galleria is the secret entrance. The main Post Oak entrance is chaos. Nordstrom side, second level, thank me later.

Ring footage and police reports don't accomplish anything in my experience. The camera is for insurance claims, not actual justice. Sad but true.

Our neighborhood pooled money for extra private security patrol one night a week. Break-ins dropped significantly. It's not cheap but it works.

Ring Alarm Pro with the cameras. If you're already in the Ring ecosystem it just works. $20/month for monitoring and cloud storage for all cameras. The integration is the selling point.

Our neighborhood started a group chat where people post when they're expecting deliveries and others keep an eye out. Old school community policing. Actually works.

My wife is a teacher and her take-home after insurance, retirement, and union dues is about $3,200/month. Our mortgage alone is $2,100. Do the math.

Whatever you pick, the yard sign and window stickers matter almost as much as the actual system. Most burglars are opportunistic and will skip a house with visible security signs.

West Campus is where you learn to function on 4 hours of sleep. The Thursday night noise starts at 10 PM and doesn't stop until 3 AM.

The HEB on West Gray is a social scene. Saturday afternoon grocery shopping there is basically a networking event for Inner Loop Houston.

Midtown is Houston's starter neighborhood. You live there at 24, have a great time, then move to the Heights or Montrose at 28 when you want to sleep on Friday nights.

610 through the Galleria is the closest thing Houston has to actual hell. I time my entire life around avoiding that stretch between 3 and 7 PM.

Google reviews matter but read the actual reviews, not just the star rating. Look for people who mention honest pricing and them being told what DIDN'T need fixing.

I have everything delivered to my office now. Annoying to carry it all home but at least it's secure.

SimpliSafe. No contract, $17/month monitoring, easy DIY install. Had it 3 years and it's triggered twice from actual incidents — both times the monitoring center called within 30 seconds. Would buy again.

Main St on a Saturday night is either the best night of your life or the worst. No in between.

LOCK YOUR CARS. I know it sounds obvious but half the break-ins are just unlocked doors. They walk down the street pulling handles. If it's locked they move on.

Texas not updating the basic allotment since 2019 is criminal. Property values have exploded but state funding per student hasn't moved. Districts like GISD are caught in the middle — they can't just raise taxes without voter approval.

Never, ever leave a gun in your car overnight. I know Texas loves truck guns but an unsecured firearm in an unlocked vehicle is just a free gun for criminals.

You've had to explain to out-of-state friends that Dallas and Fort Worth are two different cities with two different vibes and no, we don't all ride horses.

Shhh stop telling people. Part of what makes it great is that it's not packed every showing.

Package lockbox on the porch. $80 on Amazon. You put a sign on it that says "delivery drivers: please place packages inside." Works 95% of the time. Haven't had a theft since.

SignatureCare is fast but they hit me with a $4,200 bill because they were out of network for my BCBS plan. The care was excellent but check your insurance FIRST if you have time.

Sharing this with my neighbors. They need to see this.

Texas Theatre is the best kept secret in Dallas. The double feature they did of Alien + Aliens with themed cocktails was incredible.
