The toll roads add up too. My commute is technically 10 minutes faster on the tollway but costs $8/day. That's another $160/month. I take the free road now and listen to podcasts.
My grandmother's family has owned their house on Dowling St since 1947. Developers knock on her door twice a month offering cash. She's not selling. Not everyone has that choice.
Lived in Mueller for 3 years with young kids. Best decision we made. The Thinkery, the trails, the HEB, the Alamo — everything we need is in walking distance.
The "but you get summers off" crowd has clearly never met a teacher. My wife spends summer doing curriculum planning, professional development, and setting up her classroom. It's unpaid work.
hotel emma is one of the coolest hotels ive ever been in. worth a drink at the bar
the no-BS environment is accurate. nobody cares what gi brand you wear or what your belt level is. show up, work hard, be a good training partner. thats the whole vibe
The Post Oak BRT was a good idea in theory but it also eliminated lanes for cars, so regular traffic got worse. Classic Houston infrastructure.
Hyde Park is the sleeper. Quiet, walkable, beautiful homes, and still close to campus. It's where the professors live.
TxDOT project timelines are suggestions at best. I've lived near a highway expansion that was supposed to take 2 years. It took 6. When it finished they immediately started a new project on the connecting highway.
Ship to a UPS Store access point or FedEx hold location. Both are free. Less convenient but zero theft risk.
trained here for 6 months before moving out of state and it was the best BJJ experience ive had. Travis Lutter is the real deal. his attention to detail in technique is next level. the fact that you can learn from a UFC veteran for $170/month is incredible value
The joke is that Texas has two seasons: summer and construction. And somehow they overlap perfectly to make everything worse.
Skip ADT. The equipment is overpriced, the contracts are 3 years, and the cancellation process is a nightmare. There's a reason they need door-to-door salespeople.
Share that footage on your neighborhood social media. Nextdoor, Facebook group, whatever. Other people's cameras might have caught him arriving or leaving in a car. Plate numbers are what police need.
my shin conditioning story: trained muay thai for 6 months and got a huge knot on my shin from a bad check in sparring. panicked and thought it was a fracture. turns out it was calcium buildup from the conditioning process. its normal and it went away after a few weeks. your body is adapting — trust the process
I lived in Midtown for 3 years. Had my car broken into 4 times. Loved the convenience, hated the crime. Moved to Montrose and the break-ins stopped.
Dashcam with parking mode. It records when it detects motion near the car. Won't stop the theft but gives you evidence and sometimes a clear face.
Deadbolt, motion sensor lights, and a door reinforcement kit. The kit is $50 and makes it nearly impossible to kick the door in. That's the most vulnerable entry point.
I switched from a truck to a sedan specifically because of gas costs. Went from $400/month to $180/month. I miss the truck but I don't miss being broke.
Motion sensor lights on the driveway made a difference for us. Not a guarantee but they don't like being lit up.
the tree kicking myth needs to die forever. i literally saw a new student try to kick a tree outside the gym after class. coach had to explain that Tony Jaa is not a reliable source of training information
Hole in the Wall is a national treasure. The amount of musical talent that's played that tiny stage is staggering.
Living in the Galleria area without a car is almost possible. Almost. You can walk to groceries, restaurants, and shops. But one trip to the suburbs and you need a car.
Project Row Houses is one of the most important cultural institutions in Houston. What Rick Lowe built there is preservation through art. It works.
Mueller is what happens when urban planning actually works. Walkable, dense, mixed-use, good transit, parks. Every city should be building Muellers.
