Got a used Prius for my commute. $14K and it gets 50mpg. My gas bill went from $380 to $140. Best financial decision I've made in years. I still have the truck for weekends.
Left teaching last year for corporate training. Same skills, double the salary, and I don't cry in my car anymore. I miss the kids but I don't miss the system.
The community land trust model is the only thing that will save Third Ward. Private ownership can't compete with developer cash. Collective ownership can.
Cat shield or cage. $150-300 installed. It's a metal plate bolted over the catalytic converter. Doesn't make it impossible to steal but makes it take 10+ minutes instead of 90 seconds. Most thieves move on.
The fact that he tried the handle and moved on when it was locked tells you everything. Most of these people are looking for easy targets. Make your house not the easy one.
The grocery store problem is real. I live in one of the new apartments and I drive to the Midtown HEB for groceries. That's 15 minutes away. For EaDo to be a real neighborhood, it needs a grocery store.
Costco or Sam's gas is consistently 15-20 cents cheaper per gallon. Over a month that saves me $25-30. The membership pays for itself just in gas.
Starting salary in my district is $52K. Starting salary at Buc-ee's is $50K. With less stress, less responsibility, and no papers to grade at home. That tells you everything about how we value teachers.
The hard truth is that unless someone is caught in the act, police don't have the resources to investigate car break-ins. Prevention is all you've got.
8th Wonder Brewery is the reason EaDo exists as a neighborhood. They anchored the whole area when nobody else would open there.
Our realtor didn't mention the flood zone. We found out AFTER making an offer when the lender required flood insurance. $3,200/year we hadn't budgeted for. It almost killed the deal. Always check the FEMA map yourself.
I genuinely think some of these projects are designed to never finish so the contracts keep paying out. Call me cynical but 3 years for a highway widening is insane.
Alliance Dallas is the best in DFW for women right now. the womens class is great for building confidence and the female competitors on the team are super welcoming to new women. i started in the womens class and transitioned to co-ed within 3 months
Protested 5 years in a row. Won every time. Average reduction of about $20K in appraised value. The informal hearing is where it happens — bring your comps printed out and be polite.
the arm-in guillotine to marcelotine transition is one of the highest percentage sequences in nogi. youre not one dimensional youre efficient. keep sharpening that blade
the pearl is what every city wishes their waterfront area looked like
Texas Property Code 92.056. Send a WRITTEN notice (certified mail or email with delivery receipt) describing the condition and giving them reasonable time to fix it. If they don't, you have options including repair-and-deduct.
Free CapMetro for UT students is the most underused benefit. Half my classmates drove to campus and paid for parking. Just take the bus.
This is relevant to my interests. Saving this thread.
Reolink cameras (no subscription, local storage) paired with SimpliSafe sensors for monitoring. Best of both worlds. Camera footage stays on YOUR hard drive, not someone else's cloud.
The dry law in the Heights is the dumbest thing about Houston. It's 2026 and I can't buy a bottle of wine on my own street because of a 1912 vote. We've tried to overturn it multiple times and it keeps failing.
guillotines are legit and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Marcelo Garcia built an entire GOAT career on guillotines and arm drags. having a signature move is a strength not a weakness
Do NOT withhold rent without following the proper legal steps. Texas is very landlord-friendly and they can evict you fast if you just stop paying without going through the process.
Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, and Prius are the most targeted. Higher ground clearance = easier access, and Toyota cats have more precious metals. If you own one of these, you're a target.
If your employer offers any kind of remote days, negotiate hard. Even 2 days from home cuts your gas bill 40% and adds years to your car's life.
