I leave town every year during SXSW. Drive to Big Bend, camp for a week, come back when the tourists are gone. No regrets.
The "market rate" excuse is infuriating when the unit is in worse condition than when you moved in. Market rate for WHAT exactly.
The HCFCD interactive map is essential. I checked it before buying my house in Katy and found out the street had flooded 3 times in 10 years. Chose a different neighborhood.
this is the way. its not just food its church
Sampson has this basketball program running like a machine. Doesn't matter who transfers in or out, the defense is always elite.
Car break-ins are the Montrose tax. I've had my window smashed twice. Don't leave ANYTHING in your car. Not even a phone charger.
Mowing lawns. Seriously. Especially in summer when people don't want to be outside. $40-60 per yard, you can do 6-8 in a day. A truck and a mower is all you need.
Bacon egg and cheese on flour with green salsa. That's the order. Every time. Don't overthink it.
Ninfa's green sauce is the greatest condiment in Houston history. I buy it by the jar and put it on everything.
El Tiempo fajitas are $32 for a plate and worth every penny. The meat quality is unmatched.
My commute used to be 1.5 hours round trip. That's 7.5 hours a week, 30 hours a month, sitting in traffic producing nothing. Remote work gave me a whole day back every month.
Handyman work on TaskRabbit or Thumbtack. Hanging TVs, assembling furniture, minor repairs. If you're actually handy you can charge $50-75/hr and stay booked.
McDonald's sweet tea for $1 is the best value in fast food beverages and I will die on this hill. They put an absurd amount of sugar in it.
Fortis MMA has quietly become one of the best camps in the world. not just a fighter factory but a WINNING fighter factory. their fighters consistently show improvement fight to fight which tells you the coaching is elite
The Cajun Navy showing up during Harvey was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Random guys with bass boats pulling families off rooftops. Houston takes care of Houston.
Kerbey Lane queso at 1 AM is therapy. Whatever happened on 6th Street, the queso makes it better.
the property taxes in 09 made me physically ill when i saw them
Lived in Meyerland during Harvey. 4 feet of water in the house. The one thing I'd tell anyone: buy flood insurance even if you're not in a flood zone. Standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover flooding.
I deliver for Amazon Flex on weekends. $25/hr base plus tips. Use your own vehicle. 4-5 hour blocks. It's not exciting but it's reliable money with a flexible schedule.
The Domain is Austin's future and that's the problem. Developer-planned neighborhoods replacing organic communities. Efficient and empty.
Anvil single-handedly raised the cocktail standard in Houston. Before Anvil, Houston cocktail culture was vodka sodas at Midtown bars. Bobby Heugel changed everything.
Appreciate someone bringing this up. Real local intel.
METRO Red Line from Midtown to TMC is 12 minutes. I sold my second car and take the train every day. Best decision I've made.
My family has been in Austin since the 1970s. The city I grew up in doesn't exist anymore. That's not California's fault but it's hard not to feel some kind of way about it.
Magnolia Cafe "Sorry, we're open" is the most Austin sentence ever. That place has seen things.
