la Barbecue beef ribs on Saturday are the best single BBQ item in Austin. Yes, better than Franklin. The rib is massive and the flavor is unreal.
Brace for the first time someone invites you to a backyard BBQ and it turns into a 7 hour event with 40 people you've never met.
Look for areas near good school districts. Even if you don't have kids, school district quality correlates with neighborhood safety and maintenance. It's a useful proxy.
Micklethwait smoked turkey is the sleeper pick. People skip turkey at BBQ joints but this one is moist, smoky, and better than the brisket at most places.
Drive through the area at night before you sign anything. If you feel uneasy at 10pm on a Tuesday, trust that instinct.
Trades. HVAC, plumbing, electrical. Most will hire you with zero experience and train you. Starting pay is $18-22/hr but within 2-3 years you're at $30+. Texas needs tradespeople badly.
the food on this side of town is unmatched. dont even try to argue
The no turn signal thing drives me INSANE. It's a lever. Right there. On the steering column. Takes zero effort.
take visitors to the river walk first THEN the alamo. manages expectations
Jo's coffee is mid. The mural is the real product. But I still go because it's South Congress and the people-watching is unbeatable.
This is exactly the kind of conversation I come here for. Real local takes.
Factor in ALL costs not just mortgage. Property tax, insurance, HOA, maintenance, and the stuff that breaks. My first year I spent $8K on things the inspection missed.
the new phil collins collection is actually really cool
austin refugees are driving prices up. seen it happen in real time
Third Ward and UH are inseparable. The school being right there in the middle of Houston is what makes it special. It's not a suburban campus in the middle of nowhere.
Pueblo Viejo has won "best food truck" so many times they should just retire the award. The food is consistently excellent.
the missions trail is 100x better and nobody does it. go to mission san jose
Old school Tex-Mex places are the best example of this. The ones where the enchilada plate is $9.99 and it comes with rice beans and chips. No substitutions. Perfection.
Tiger Den hand-pulled noodles are mesmerizing to watch. The guy makes them from a dough ball to perfect noodles in 30 seconds.
the cancellation policy is the one that gets people. i signed a 2 year contract at a DFW gym and when i tried to cancel after a year (moved across town) they told me i owed the remaining 12 months. read. the. contract
Home Slice patio on a Friday night is still one of my favorite things in Austin. Good pizza, cold beer, people walking by. It works.
Gas stations running out before storms is real. Fill up when you hear the first forecast. Don't wait until it's announced on the news.
San Antonio erasure in this thread is criminal. River Walk, missions, best Mexican food in Texas, most affordable big city. Put some respect on SA.
judson rockets are a dynasty and the rest of texas doesnt care. infuriating
Costco for bulk items, HEB for weekly stuff, and I still end up at Walmart at 10pm because I forgot something. Every single week.
