DKR on a Saturday night is the best atmosphere in college football. 100,000 people doing the Hook 'Em sign. Visiting teams hate it.
If you're lucky enough to have a Gold's Gym nearby, that's still the gold standard for serious lifting. Some locations are better than others though.
Car insurance in Texas is insane and nobody talks about it. Mine went from $140 to $210/month for the same coverage. Zero accidents. Zero tickets.
100% Taquito barbacoa on Saturday morning. If you've never been, clear your schedule. Arrive before 10 AM.
Buc-ee's is an experience, not a restaurant. You go for the vibes and the clean bathroom and you leave with $40 of beaver-branded impulse purchases.
lol i work downtown and literally never eat on the river walk
I fish the north end of the lake every weekend and this guide is spot on. The PGBT bridge supports are a bass magnet. I've caught my three biggest bass (4.2, 4.8, and 5.1 lbs) within casting distance of those pilings.
the best way to get a new fan hooked is to show them a handful of classic fights. show them Holloway vs Kattar, Adesanya vs Gastelum, Khabib vs McGregor. those fights cover the full spectrum of what makes MMA incredible
you left out el milagrito. criminal offense
The merge thing is the real danger. Who taught people to merge at 40mph onto a 75mph highway? That's how accidents happen.
Musician here. Played 6th Street for 12 years. Moved to San Marcos last year because I couldn't afford rent anymore. The "Live Music Capital" pushed out the musicians. Think about that.
Birria tacos here have gotten so much better in the last few years. The trend actually brought legit birria spots out of hiding.
Invest in a good insulated water bottle. A Yeti or Stanley with ice stays cold for 8+ hours in your car. Warm water in the Texas heat is torture.
the shuttle services on the guadalupe are worth the money. dont try to DIY parking
Anyone have specific recommendations? I'm always looking for new spots.
The bathroom thing alone justifies its existence. After driving 3 hours on a Texas highway I would pay $5 just for a clean bathroom. The food is a bonus.
My Mexican friends refuse to eat at most Tex-Mex places. But they also admit that queso (which doesn't exist in Mexico) is addictive. Cultural exchange works both ways.
Crunch Fitness is a solid middle ground. More equipment than PF, actual free weight area, $25-30/month at most locations.
Parking strategy: find shade, even if it means walking farther. A shaded parking spot saves you 20 degrees of interior temp compared to full sun.
I moved here from California and I think Whataburger is great but the cult following is disproportionate to the food. It's an A- burger with an S tier fanbase.
south flores street has incredible mexican food. skip the tourist stuff
This has been on my mind too. Living in Dallas-Fort Worth gives you a different perspective on it.
my husband just retired after 20 years at lackland. we are staying. love this city
Compared to where I moved from in the northeast, this is still a bargain. But yeah the trajectory is not great.
Brazilian jiu jitsu gym. I know it sounds random but hear me out — you train with the same people 3-4 times a week, you suffer together, and the community is insanely tight. Changed my social life.
